Adopt-a-Beach Inveraray held its first official beach clean event on 19th September 2009 to coincide with the Marine Conservation Society Beachwatch Big Weekend.
Fourteen local volunteers helped clean the beach from Barn Brae to Aray Bridge with more than 650 individual items of beach litter collected, much of which was recycled.
Amongst all the expected tins, bottles and plastics we found a large gas canister, a wheelbarrow, road sign and spade. The results of our beach clean have been submitted to the Marine Conservation Society for inclusion in the Annual UK Beach Litter Survey Report, which will be published in the spring.
We would like to thank the GRAB Trust for the loan of gloves and littler pickers, Bill Nelson from First Aid 4 Gambia who provided First Aid cover for the event and John Munro who prepared a superb barbecue for all the volunteers afterwards.
Due to the great response we will be holding our next clean on the Beachwatch Big Weekend being held over the 18th-19th September 2010.
